Family Files & Books

Many of our family history books are no longer in print. They and our family files are kept in a climate-controlled vault with fire-suppression system. Some of the things you might find in our family files are original documents and others are photocopies. You might find

• marriage licenses or certificates
• birth, baptism and death certificates
• immigration documents
• family stories
• county documents
• newspaper clippings
• scrapbooks
• family group sheets and ancestor charts
• journals

Some families have chosen to donate more files than others, which may determine how much you will find in our family files. Also, because so many of Fayette County’s early residents were German and Czech immigrants, some of our documents will need to be translated. Of special note is our collection of local historian Walter Freytag’s family files. With only a few exceptions, these items may be photocopied or photographed for your personal use.
